Abstract:
New products development process (NPD) is highly affecting the economic growth especially in innovative industries like the pharmaceutical industry. NPD affects the speed of introducing new products to the market which is a key competitive advantage for firms. This project is focusing on the new products development process (NPD) in the generic pharmaceutical industry, as it contributes to the future of the company and subsequently the future of the industry. The objective of this project is to identify the main areas of improving new products development process in the generic pharmaceutical industry as applied to Egypt. This research focuses on the real case of an Egyptian Pharmaceutical company as the field study. A survey is carried out to assess the practices of NPD within one of the top ten pharmaceutical manufacturing companies in Egypt that adopted a new products development process. The outcome of this research is the identification of the main issues affecting the NPD process. Four aspects affecting NPD process were surveyed (Teams & resources, Infra-structure, Management, Metrics). By analysis, “Teams & resources” and “Infra-structure “ aspects were found to be the categories most affecting NPD process. This outcome will help management to put an action plan to cover the most important aspects and identify the best practices to be adopted in the pharmaceutical industry. Major recommendations include the solid implementation of project management tools and tactics in NPD. In addition to the empowerment of cross-functional teams with best practices to ensure team autonomy.
