Abstract:
This thesis examines the impact of developing the Venture Capital (VC) industry on the Egyptian economy using three main variables, the Value of GDP, the Unemployment rate, and the Value of FDI using a sample of eight out of eleven VC companies in Egypt. On one hand, the qualitative findings of this research provide strong evidence that the growth and development of the VC industry could boost the Egyptian GDP through promoting innovation, supporting SMEs, and investing in the main sectors constituting the Egyptian GDP. Our findings further show that the VC industry could reduce the unemployment rate through investing in start-ups and growth stages and attract FDI through attracting foreign LPs to their funds and foreign investors to their portfolio companies at exit. On the other hand, the statistical correlation in this research proved the existence of a strong, significant, and positive correlation between the VC Investment Value and each of the GDP value and the Unemployment rate. It further found a positive yet weak and insignificant correlation between the VC Investment Value and the Value of FDI. This research further provides an in-depth analysis of the main challenges hindering the development of the VC industry in Egypt, while shedding light on global best practices in the VC space to act as recommendations for overcoming those challenges. The survey shows that Legal and Regulatory as well as VC industry-specific categories are the two main sources of challenges for VC firms in Egypt.
